2010 WSOP Main Event: Day 5 Down to 574 Players
The main event of the World Series of Poker*, the No-Limit Hold’em World Championship event #57, is beginning the process of thinning the herd as starting on Tuesday there were 1,204 poker players remaining. Most of them were eliminated after a big day of action. Heading into Day 5, among the former world champions still in contention of the 2010 WSOP* main event Tuesday included Johnny Chan, Dan Harrington, Scotty Nguyen and Robert Varkonyi. Chris Moneymaker, Jim Bechtel and Joe Cada were eliminated as Bechtel lost on a hand that began with pocket jacks and Cada has an ace-queen of spades hand that was not enough to stay alive as he was beat out by pocket tens.
Moneymaker was done in by “Big Slick” as his ace-king was bettered by pocket kings. Cada was the 2009 WSOP main event winner and left this year with his reputation enhanced for being a top player. Another big name, Daniel Negreanu, was also eliminated in the 2010 WSOP main event along with ESPN Poker Club champion David Braun. The United States had far and away the most players in the main event with close to 5,000 remaining with Canada next at 482 and then Great Britain at 292. As of Wednesday the original 7,319 entries for the main event were down to 574 for Day 5 of the WSOP main event.
The money bubble was busted back on Tuesday night when Tim McDonald from Kentucky bowed out in 748th place leaving the rest still in contention for the 2010 WSOP main event with cash prizes. Tony Dunst of Las Vegas was the chip leader with a total stack of over 1,500,000. He was trailed by fellow American players Duy Le, Garrett Adelstein, Matt Affleck, and Phil Galfond. One of the best features about the World Series of Poker is the new stars that emerge each year thanks in large part to the online poker rooms and satellite qualifying. Heading into Day 5 of the main event, this year figures to be no different as more players emerge from nowhere to become big name poker players.
